WORSHIP AND SPECIAL MUSIC ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1

This Sunday we will celebrate World Communion Day, which is in its 90th year. Begun in 1933 by the Rev. Hugh Thomas Kerr, a Presbyterian minister, the special Sunday grew from an idea Kerr had while participating in the 1930 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. In 1940, the former Federal Council of Churches, now the National Council of Churches, adopted it as an annual special Sunday service, which honors the spirit of “Christian unity and ecumenical cooperation” among denominations.

This Sunday’s Special Music will feature our choir singing, “Come to the Table,” by J. Althouse. We welcome the choir back after their Summer break.

T.E.A.M. SPECIAL COLLECTON CONTINUES THIS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1

During September, the Standing Committee sponsored a special mission drive for the T.E.A.M. Fund, which offers support to people in the greater Tiverton area who have emergency expenses. At the end of the summer, the Fund became low due to the number of requests since January. Thus, we began a mission drive in September to increase the T.E.A.M. funds. We have been so blessed by our congregation’s support of this mission.

This Sunday will be our last formal day to accept contributions, but it does not end the need for this Fund. We will accept additional contributions in the days ahead. If you write a check, make sure to put “TEAM Fund” in the subject line of your check. Place it in the Sunday collection plate or send it to the church office.

SPECIAL MISSION FOR FAMILY PET ADVOCATES

The Standing Committee will have a special mission drive the first two Sundays of October for Family Pet Advocates. The day, which honors St Francis of Assisi, falls in between those two Sundays. We are asking members of the Congregation to bring in pet supplies, such as cat litter, dry and canned foods, and treats, which we'll collect in bins in the Sanctuary and at the North entrance to the church.

Family Pet Advocates assists individuals in need with supplies and support to keep their pets with them, rather than feeling that they must bring them to a shelter due to financial hardship, ageing, etc. It was founded by Barbie Lewis and has Amicable family volunteers

You can also donate through their Amazon Wish List! Give it a click!

NOT BY BREAD ALONE MISSION

During October as part of our Thanksgiving Basket Project, we are again collecting items that families need but are not covered by SNAP benefits. The items we collect will be put into bags and given to families as they come to pick up their baskets at the Tiverton Public Library on Saturday, November 18, 2023. We will not be purchasing these items. So, we will only be able to give out what has been donated.

Donation bins will be located at the North and South entrances of the church. Items that are needed include paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, dish detergent, laundry detergent, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and any other items that come to mind.

LET’S EXPLORE INTERGENERATIONAL FAITH COMMUNITY-BUILDING: RETREAT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2023

The Intergenerational Ministry Retreat—Engage All Generations—is now rescheduled for Saturday, October 14, in the Upper Hall. Members of the Retreat Planning Team will reach out to those who responded to the first invitation as well as the entire congregation about the updated details. If you would like to RSVP for the new October 14 retreat date, it’s not too late. Scan the QR code to RSVP!

With warm regards,

The Retreat Planning Team

Jack Leandro, Sarah Martin, Ray Medeiros, and
the Rev. Nancy Soukup

THANKSGIVING BASKET MISSION

The Thanksgiving Basket Mission has begun! Donations of food items and financial support provide food baskets to residents in need in the greater Tiverton community. Last year Amicable's Thanksgiving Basket Project ended with the distribution of approximately 160 baskets! Let's beat last year's collections!!!!

If you would like to make a monetary donation to Amicable's Thanksgiving Basket Project, click here or scan the QR code, and choose the Thanksgiving Mission to donate to from the dropdown menu.

COFFEE HOUR SIGN UP

What do nice drinks, good treats, and wonderful company have in common? Amicable's Coffee Hour!

We are eager to have hosts for our Sunday Coffee Hours. We are trying make hosting more accessible for all members by having the Upper Hall set-up for coffee hour each week and by making treats available in the Upper Hall kitchen cabinets. We always welcome those who wish to bake, but snacks (gluten and gluten free) will also be in the kitchen. Count on enough food for about 25 people.

In addition to simplifying the hosting process, we also have a new sign-up process. Follow the directions below after clicking on this link or scan the QR code.

Directions:

  1. Please choose an open date from the calendar (It will say "OPEN Coffee Hr.").

  2. Fill out the form below and hit the SUBMIT button.

  3. We will book you for that date and send you a confirmation email.

Fire up your oven or stop at the grocery store...all treats are created equal and just as yummy!

LOVE TO SING?

That is all that is required to join the Amicable Choir! You need not be an accomplished singer, nor do you need to have any choir experience. We meet once a week for one hour on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM. We typically sing twice a month in the service. Come give it a try! Talk to Vaughn Bryner for more details or email him at vaughnbryner@msn.com

AMICABLE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

ACTS is looking for an Assistant Manager: ACTS is looking for an Assistant Manager to help support Management Staff. Please contact Martha MacNaught at m.s.macnaught@cox.net or Gale Gabriel at ducks4jkj@yahoo.com.

ACTS could ALSO use your help! Ways to give ACTS a helping hand:

  • Empty donation bins: We have two donation bins, one in the courtyard near the Thrift Shop entrance and one on the porch at the north entry. Both bins typically need to be emptied and the contents brought inside 5-6 times each week (leave items in the upper lobby or thrift shop hallway). Our staff does this every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. If someone would check on the other days it would really, really help.

  • Learn how the shop operates: Come spend an hour or two with us on a Tuesday when we sort and organize, and a Thursday or Saturday when the shop is open and see how everything works. It’s not hard, it’s fun and we DO need your help.

Volunteer for trash and recycling detail: We need a volunteer to share in the weekly Trash and Recycling collection and then to put these out for Town pick-up. Contact Roger Gauthier at r.c.gauthier@cox.net for details.

PASTORAL CARE AND PRAYER LIST

During our services, we welcome prayer requests. These are added to our ongoing prayer list. If you have a request and are not able to join us for in-person worship, please send your request to the Rev. Nancy Hamlin Soukup, revnhs@amicablechurch.org.

Please Note: If the status of someone you have added to the prayer list has changed, please let Rev. Nancy know so that we can update our listing.
